"I Got The Right Tactics..."

I don't think that my sentiments are at all unique when I say that I believe that A Tribe Called Quest was one of the most loved, revered and influential groups in the history of Hip-Hop. They created the blueprint [along with other Native Tonguers like De La etc.] for many of your favorite rappers and producers [please don't sleep on Tribe's production chops] of today.

It's officially summer and I'm in the hoopt-mobile cruisin' & I got the ipod on shuffle when "Bonita Applebum" by ATCQ starts to creep into my speakers. Imma tell you that that joint brought me right back to the summer of 1990 when that was the jam in erry-body's cassette deck [yeah, I still got cassettes lol!]. I was about 14 at the time and you couldn't tell me nuthin' about that joint not being the hottest song ever. The crunchy groove with the light string & piano with the Asian-influenced string topping it off. Seventeen years later it's still my joint.

This song was also quite educational to me as a young lad. This song actually taught me what the word "prophylactic" meant. Now I know summa y'all are gonna front and laugh at me like damn dude you didn't know what the word prophylactic meant at 14 years of age? Well..no I didn't and I am not one for fronting [especially of late..]. But even if no one will admit it I am sure that a lot of you dudes and gals out there did some research when they used to censor that word from the song when it was played on the radio and when you finally heard the word you were saying to yourself... what in the bumbo-raas is a prophylactic? Anyway... I just wanna give big thanks to Q-Tip, Mutty-Ranks, Ali Shaheed Mohammed & Jarobi {?} for teaching me that word... I never use it [the word, that is..] but I thought I was the man when I was tellin' my little BMX-bike crew the definition of the word.

Who says rap music can't be educational.
